Future of Cyprus as an Overseas Property Investment Opportunity

For many years this beautiful Mediterranean Island was fraught with conflict. Tensions between the Turkish and Greek populations spilled over many times in the 1960’s after Cyprus had won it’s independence from British Colonial rule. In 1974 the Turkish Government mounted an invasion of the Island after a coup was carried out by the Greek Army to overthrow the Government in Athens. Around 200,000 Greek Cypriots fled from the North to the South of the Island and since then Cyprus has been split in two, with the Northern half declaring itself an independent Republic in 1983.

The newly formed Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, for a period after, had a difficult relationship with the Republic of Cyprus in the South and the rest of the World, once making Holidays in Northern Cyprus a difficult prospect. However things have improved dramatically in recent years, especially since the turn of the Millennium and Cyprus’ accession to the European Union in 2004. The North has become more and more open and Northern Cyprus Holidays have now become extremely appealing to a wide variety of people around the World.

The beauty of the North is there for all to see, with stunning Mountain ranges replete with quaint little Mediterranean Villages. Gorgeous white sandy Beaches looking out onto the azure blue Sea along with some of the finest little Restaurants and Bars in the Mediterranean. Along with an extremely welcoming and friendly local populace it’s of no surprise as to why Holidays in Northern Cyprus have become so popular with thousands of tourists each year.

Barriers that were once a part of daily life on both sides of the divide are now being taken down. Efforts have been made to open many more border crossings between the North and the South of Cyprus. Recently one was opened up in the capital Nicosia making it easier for holiday makers in Northern Cyprus to cross the border in both directions.

The future for both the North of Cyprus and the Island as a whole is an optimistic one. While the ‘Annan Plan’ to unite the Island proposed by former Director-General of the United Nations, Kofi Annan failed to bring about the desired results, the move was seen by both sides as a step in the right direction. With Cyprus’ membership of the EU now in place, there are hopes that once again Cyprus may one day unify under the same flag. Whatever the outcome it won’t stop people from coming to this breathtaking Island and having wonderful Northern Cyprus Holidays.
